Rath Yatra in Puri: A Sacred Journey of Devotion, Culture, and Celebration

Every year, the coastal town of Puri in Odisha transforms into a vibrant ocean of faith and festivity during the world-renowned Rath Yatra, also known as the Chariot Festival. Celebrated with unmatched grandeur and deep spiritual reverence, Rath Yatra marks the ceremonial journey of Lord Jagannath, along with his siblings Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra, from their sanctum in the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple, about 3 kilometers away.

The highlight of the festival is the awe-inspiring procession of three massive, elaborately decorated wooden chariots — each representing one of the deities. Pulled by thousands of devotees using thick ropes, these chariots roll through the Grand Road (Bada Danda) amid the thunderous chanting of “Jai Jagannath!”, traditional drums, conch shells, and joyous dancing. It is one of the few occasions when the deities come out of the temple for public darshan, allowing people from all walks of life — regardless of caste, creed, or religion — to offer their prayers and witness divinity up close.

The festival typically takes place in the month of June or July (Ashadha) and lasts for around 9 days. After staying at the Gundicha Temple for a week, the deities return in a similar procession known as the Bahuda Yatra. This entire journey symbolizes Lord Jagannath’s annual visit to his birthplace, and the return signifies his reunion with his consort.
